I wrote this summary for an episode of "Caminos en Ciencia" :www.caminosenciencia.org/new-blog/2018/12/12/interview-with-dr-blanca-himes
Very soon my interview will be uploaded!

During my PhD I volunteered in many outreach activities, some highlights:
  • SACNAS at Cornell chapter is a new welcoming group that its main goal is to empower Hispanics and Native Americans in Science. I was the Outreach Chair for Spring 2017, with multiple events for the community. I am now the Social Chair and my main goal is to build tighter bonds between our members.

  • I was the vice-president of GEEKS (Graduate students Employing Empathy, Knowledge and Services) from 2015 to 2017, this graduate student organization is interesting in spreading scientific knowledge to young as well as encourage in social work to empower our community.
  • I contacted GRASSHOPR (Graduate Student School Outreach Program) and design a session to teach basic thermodynamic concepts to third grade students at the South Ithaca Elementary school. I taught children in ways that excite and educate them, about entropy, enthalpy, and how together with temperature they decide what happens in the molecular world (the mini-course was taught in April 2015 at south Hill Elementary School).

At Colombia:
I was a volunteer at the celebration of the “astronomy year” in the fall of 2009 at "Universidad Nacional de Colombia", during which I helped people use telescopes to observe different constellations and planets.

Before starting college, I helped to build houses in some of Bogotá’s slums through a nonprofit organization called “Un Techo para mi País” (“A Roof for my Country”), and continued to volunteer during the beginning of college.
